A web site does not rank within a couple of weeks, but requires time and constant monitoring of the effects of the changes we applied and take this step for step until the desired result is reached - but then we have to maintain this status.

Search Engine Optimization project from zero to page 1

Blueriver has several design and large goldsmith studios where the jewelry is manufactured.
Thailand is well known to be a affordable location to buy gemstones and acknowledged worldwide for the detailed and fine goldsmith work it produces.
The web site exists now nearly 2 years:

The start:

Ranking zero at all major search engines.
We started in April 2006

Our Analysis:

The first reason why the site did not come up in the first 50 pages of the search engines was that the site had a asp coded dynamic navigation and dynamically generated meta-tags and titles which were all the same throughout the web site.
Content was, exception was the "About Section", all generated by the database. This means the total product display was for search engines practically not existing. The products were called by a search-engine unfriendly query string and therefore very difficult to optimize.
There was also a lot of duplicate content on the site, generated by the database and less or no wording in the main modules pages and we know that text, reflecting the keywords, is necessary to achieve good ranking.

The first improvement phase:

First we created new templates and manually inserted the titles and Meta name tags. We had to change the complete html code of the site because there were too many nested tables, redundant tags and tags which belonged into the Stylesheet and not the code. Pages were literally reduced to half the size in some cases just by rewriting the pages with the result that they are easily to crawl now for the search engines.

Because we noticed that the pages came up very slowly when the spiders or bots were crawling the site, we decided to integrate robot text on the site server. Reason for this very slow access was the incredible amount of server side includes which built the actual pages. We implemented the crawl delay commands (User-agent: msnbotCrawl-delay: 120) and the spiders crawled now the site without any problems.

We could finally see the first results in Yahoo and MSN. This took us about 3 months, but the site still did not show up in the search results of Google. Search engine optimization services are very complicated and it requires being really committed to the client and the job we have accepted.

The second improvement phase:

We kept on digging to find the problem why Google didn't display the site in the search results but kept it on page 23 up to 12 with the different keywords. Google assigns page rank to most sites based on their amount of back links; we suspected that this was one of the major problems. When we searched in Google search engine (link:www.yourdomain.com) the site did not show any back links at all and confirmed that we had to do some link building.

Submitting the site to various directories, community sites, and creating some one way links that were related to the theme of the e-commerce web site was the appropriate step. Accordingly we developed some link pages to exchange links and banners with other related websites to improve link popularity and page rank as this is one very important factor to increase the ranking in Google. We also noticed that this helps with MSN or Yahoo.
Another fact was that we had to add additional content, keywords, headers (<h1>) and bold tags (<b>) to the site. Until today we invested many hours into this search engine optimization project which is lasting now for 9 months and we but also our client are very pleased with the results because the site got also indexed by Google and ranks well in various other search engines.
Gemstone Jewelry and Gemstone store is the keyword phrase which was supposed to get ranking on one of the first 3 pages. At 30th of July todaygem.com ranked on the first page place 10 of Google and dropped three days later again to page 3 rankin place 24. This means we need constantly monitor this site and enhance it further.

We finally have made it to be on the first 3 pages - but it also takes effort to keep it there and demands engagement with the job we do.
Note: 31st of December 2006 we are ranking on page 1 Place 2
With the keyphrase: diamond jewelry Todaygem.com ranks at page 1 place 4

Conclusion:

Working hard and persistent to improve ranking is required. The reward is beneficial to the e-commerce business of the client and it makes us proud when we are able to deliver what we promise and reach our goals.

Note:
Due to a expansion of additional sections to the site the SEO services are put on hold for the next 3 months (we stopped in April 2008) - which resulted in a direct drop in ranking in search engine result pages for the keywords diamond jewelry which is a very competitive keyword as sales are usually very much appreciated by online jewelry shop owners. SEO is an ongoing process and when stopped web sites loose their position in the search engines result pages real quick and it will take time to reach the same result again when re-started, as the competition used this time for their advantage.

With keyword gemstone jewelry Todaygem ranked place 1 page 1, today 26 April 2008. the site dropped to place 5 page 1since services were set on hold on 1st Apri 2008 . We are curious how this time-out will effect the site.
